In a trip organised by FEA partner the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Shadow Justice Secretay Shabana Mahmood visited Miss Macaroon CIC, a social enterprise creating jobs and opportunities for young people.

New research reveals that a third of UK adults feel business has a positive impact on the national economy, and just a quarter believe it benefits wider society, while many said it has no impact at all or is actively negative. This may explain why just 15% think the national approach to business should stay the same, with campaigners urging reform.

As the International Monetary Fund recognises that corporate profits drive inflation, Future Economy Alliance campaigner Emily Darko told the Financial Times: “Our mainstream business model is broken, with a tiny minority accruing wealth at extreme cost to wider society. Business should make profit through innovation and investment, not by taking advantage of consumers.”
Social entrepreneur and leading Future Economy Alliance campaigner Lord Victor Adebowale told the Guardian: “Privatisation was pitched in the 1980s as a solution to systemic weakness in public services and the wider British state, but instead we’re left with a business model so broken that it benefits neither economy nor society. Nationalisation dominates the debate, but we have other viable alternatives.”
Commenting on the Thames Water financial crisis, social entrepreneur and leading Future Economy Alliance campaigner Lord Victor Adebowale told the Telegraph: “Only a crisis, actual or perceived, brings about real change – and Thames Water presents an opportunity to do better business.”
A study published in the Lancet has found a number of improvements in terms of mental health and wellbeing from the community wealth building programme put in place by Preston City Council.
